After My Husband's Betrayal, I Chose to Start Over

Chapter 3

I stayed at Chloe’s for two weeks.

During those two weeks, I watched Zara’s social media updates every day. And in every single post, there was a shadow of Damon.

【The moon is in the sky, and I have my Starr.】

The picture was a selfie of Zara, with Damon’s back visible in the corner, talking on the phone in front of a floor-to-ceiling window.

【Starrs always shine, and I will always follow the light.】

The picture was of a star-shaped ring on Zara’s hand, sparkling under the light, with a pair of long, slender fingers in the frame.

They were Damon’s.

【My Starr is showing me the world!】

The picture was taken in a first-class airplane cabin.

Zara was smiling brightly, next to a sleeping face in profile.

One post after another.

It made Chloe jump up and down with rage. She pointed at Zara’s feed and cursed, “That fking bitch! Is Damon Starr so fking blind he can’t see this conniving snake has ulterior motives? A dog wouldn’t even believe her!”

Chloe was furious.

In contrast, I was calm.

It was like I was finally getting through the withdrawal period. In the face of Chloe’s rage, I offered a serene analysis.

“Damon knows exactly what he’s doing.”

“He knows?”

Chloe sat down next to me.

“Then what the hell is all this ‘we’re just friends’ bullshit?”

“In Damon’s mind, as long as they haven’t slept together, it’s all innocent. He’s always believed he’s never cheated.”

Damon always held on to that one last line.

So, every time I got angry, he would always have that one line ready: 【There’s nothing going on between me and Zara. The only thing dirty here is your mind! You see everything through a dirty lens.】 And I would be silenced.

Now, looking back at all of it, I’ve made my peace.

I reminded Chloe, “The movers will be here soon.”

Since Damon and I were getting a divorce, I had to go back to the house and get my things.

After all, my mother’s heirlooms were still there.

“As long as you’ve thought it through.”

Chloe came with me, waiting for me at the door.

I had checked Zara’s social media and knew Damon was out of town on business for a few days.

I didn’t think we would run into each other, but as soon as I pushed the door open, the smell of food wafted from the kitchen. When I got closer, I saw Zara, sitting cross-legged at the dining table, eating shrimp.

Seeing me, Zara froze, like a child caught doing something wrong. She immediately stood up and called out to me.

“Mia.”

I saw Zara wearing my pajamas and my slippers. I saw the smile on Damon’s face freeze as he came out of the kitchen with a plate of food. Then, he spoke to me stiffly, “Have you eaten?”

I ignored Damon’s attempt at a peace offering and went straight to the bedroom.

And then I stopped dead.

The collectibles I kept neatly arranged on my nightstand were all in disarray. The bed was a mess, the closet had clearly been rummaged through, and even the safe inside had been opened.

My heart tightened. I instinctively went to check what was inside.

“Mia…”

The safe was empty.

Zara, standing in the doorway, spoke in a voice so faint I could barely hear it. “I’m sorry. Damon and I lost our luggage on the way back. He told me to come here and grab some clothes to wear.”

“I accidentally… opened the safe…”

My mind went blank. I turned my head and saw the shattered pieces of jade in Zara’s hand, and my breath caught in my throat.

“I really didn’t mean to.”

“Mia, I’m begging you!”

Zara suddenly lunged at me, then dropped to her knees in front of me with a thud. She grabbed my arm and sobbed.

“Please, forgive me!”
